Here are seven gaming legacies that Nintendo’s first home console left on the world. But it all starts with a nondescript beige and red box that two years later would become the retro-futuristic gray box we all know and love. With some smart decisions, creative talent, and maybe just a pinch of luck, Nintendo would become a console giant to this day. Launching in the same year that the gaming industry collapsed, Nintendo faced an uphill battle to make what would become the NES a commercial success. Perhaps no more so than the 40th anniversary of the Nintendo Entertainment System (or the Famicom, as it was dubbed for its Japanese debut in 1983). Nothing makes you grow old like the anniversary of a popular games console.
